Ajedrez
Ajedrez is a board game where every move you make carries the weight of a potential victory or a slow, inevitable defeat. Two players, sixty-four squares, sixteen pieces per side — and an almost infinite number of ways the game can unfold. This online Chess brings the full depth of the classic game to your browser, with HTML5 technology that runs smoothly on both desktop and mobile without any downloads or installations required.
How the Pieces Move
Each of the six piece types has its own movement rules, and learning them is the first step toward playing well. Pawns advance one square at a time — two on their first move — and capture diagonally. Rooks travel in straight lines as far as they want, making them excellent for controlling open files and ranks. Bishops slide diagonally and stay on the same color square throughout the game. Knights move in an L-shape and are the only pieces that can jump over others, making them unpredictable and difficult to block. The queen is the most powerful piece on the board, combining the reach of a rook and a bishop. And the king, limited to one square in any direction, is the piece whose safety determines everything.
Three special moves add further depth: castling lets your king find shelter behind a rook in a single move; en passant allows a pawn to capture an enemy pawn that has just passed it; and promotion turns a pawn that reaches the far side of the board into any piece you choose — almost always a queen.
Opening, Middlegame, and Endgame
Chess is traditionally divided into three phases, each with its own priorities. In the opening, the goal is to control the center with pawns and pieces, develop your knights and bishops quickly, and castle your king to safety. Avoid moving the same piece twice and don't bring your queen out too early.
In the middlegame, the real battles begin. Tactics decide material: look for forks (attacking two pieces at once with a single move), pins (preventing an opponent's piece from moving because it shields something more valuable), and discovered attacks (moving one piece to reveal a threat from another). Calculate carefully before committing to exchanges.
In the endgame, with fewer pieces on the board, the king becomes an active fighter rather than a piece to protect. Pawn promotion becomes the central goal, and precise technique determines who converts an advantage into a win.
Playing Against the Computer
This version of Chess pits you against an AI opponent that provides a genuine challenge for casual players while still being approachable for beginners. You can replay games, experiment with different openings, and practice the endgame techniques that are often the hardest part of chess to learn in a real match.
The interface is clean and intuitive — click a piece, then click where you want it to go. The board is clearly labeled, legal moves are highlighted, and the overall experience is built to let you focus entirely on the game.
A Game Worth Learning
Chess has been played across cultures for over a thousand years, and the reason is simple: it scales perfectly. You can play your first game within minutes of learning the rules, and decades later still find new ideas on every board. Thousands of players return to this browser version every week to practice, improve, and enjoy a game that never loses its depth.
