The Rules of Spider

Spider Solitaire is played with two standard decks of 52 cards each (104 cards total). Cards are dealt face-down across ten columns, with the top card of each column face-up and playable. Your goal is to build complete sequences from King down to Ace in the same suit within the tableau — once a complete sequence is formed, it's automatically removed from the board. Clear all eight sequences and you win.

You can move any face-up card or an ordered sequence of same-suit cards to another column, provided the card you're moving lands on one that's exactly one rank higher. Cards of different suits can also be stacked, but mixed-suit sequences can't be moved as a group — they must be broken up first. When you're stuck, click the deck in the corner to deal a new row of cards across all ten columns.

One Suit, Two Suits, Four Suits

Classic Spider Solitaire typically offers three difficulty modes based on how many suits are in play. One-suit mode uses only spades, making sequences easier to form. Two-suit adds hearts, increasing the challenge significantly. Four-suit uses all four suits and is considered one of the hardest solitaire variants — only about 1 in 3 games is winnable, even with perfect play. Start with one suit if you're new to the game and work your way up.

Strategy That Makes the Difference

The key to Spider Solitaire is managing empty columns. An empty column acts like a free cell — you can temporarily park cards there while reorganizing sequences elsewhere. Protect your empty columns carefully; letting them fill up again drastically limits your options.

Also prioritize uncovering face-down cards early. The more hidden cards you reveal, the more options open up. Avoid moving cards just to move them — every action should serve the larger goal of building complete sequences.
