Gaps solitaire

Gaps Solitaire is a strategic classic browser game that puts your planning skills to the test with a deceptively simple premise: arrange an entire deck of cards into four perfectly ordered rows. Unlike standard solitaire variants where you stack cards on foundations, Gaps Solitaire challenges you to think ahead and manage empty spaces — the gaps — to guide each suit into sequence from 2 through King.

How to Play Gaps Solitaire

The game begins by dealing all 52 cards face-up across four rows of 13 cards each. The four Aces are then removed, creating four gaps in the layout. Your job is to use these gaps strategically to sort the cards. The movement rule is straightforward but demands careful thought: a card may only be moved into a gap if the card immediately to the left of that gap is the same suit and one rank lower. So if the gap has a 7 of Hearts to its left, only the 8 of Hearts can fill it. Kings cannot be placed into any gap, since no card ranks above them — this means gaps that end up at the far right of a row become temporarily locked.

When you reach a point where no valid moves remain, the game offers a reshuffle. Any cards not already correctly positioned (2s through Kings in unbroken same-suit sequences starting from the left) are collected, shuffled, and re-dealt into the remaining open spaces — while the correctly placed cards and the gaps after each sequence stay in place. Most versions of Gaps Solitaire allow two or three reshuffles before the game ends.

Strategy Tips to Win

Success in Gaps Solitaire is far from random. A few key principles will dramatically improve your win rate. First, always prioritize moving 2s to the leftmost column — since sequences must start with a 2, any 2 out of position blocks that entire row from being completed. Second, think two or three moves ahead before committing to a placement; a gap filled prematurely can trap high-ranking cards or create dead-end gaps locked by Kings. Third, before using a reshuffle, try to extend as many complete sequences as possible — every card locked into its correct spot before the reshuffle stays there, giving you a cleaner board to work with afterward.

Managing Kings is a persistent challenge. Since Kings block gaps at the right end of rows, try to move them out of critical positions early whenever the opportunity arises. A gap locked by a King on the right is not always a lost cause — if the row to its left is nearly complete, it may become a valid finishing position for that sequence.

A Timeless Solitaire Challenge

Gaps Solitaire stands apart from better-known Solitaire games because it demands genuine spatial reasoning rather than relying on luck. Every session plays out differently depending on the initial shuffle, and even experienced players find themselves caught off guard by tricky layouts. Fans of other Table and Solitaire games like Solitario Spider or Mini Solitaire will find a fresh, engaging twist here that rewards patience and foresight.

The game is entirely mouse-driven — just click the card you want to move and click the gap where you want it placed. There are no timers to worry about, so you can take as long as you need to evaluate each move carefully. Whether you're a casual player looking for a relaxing puzzle or a strategy enthusiast chasing a clean, no-reshuffle win, Gaps Solitaire delivers a satisfying challenge in every deal.
