To play
Super Mario Crossover 2 is a classic browser platformer that takes an audacious premise and executes it with genuine craft: the levels of the original Super Mario Bros. remain exactly as you remember them, but Mario is optional.
The Roster Makes the Game
You can play as Link from The Legend of Zelda, slashing through Goombas with his sword. Or as Samus from Metroid, absorbing punishment with her armor while clearing rooms with her arm cannon. Mega Man, Simon Belmont from Castlevania, Ryu Hayabusa from Ninja Gaiden, Bill from Contra — each character from their respective NES classics is here, and each one actually plays the way they do in their home game.
Authentic Controls, Not Just Sprite Swaps
This is the key distinction that separates Super Mario Crossover 2 from a simple reskin. The developers rebuilt the feel of each character from scratch. Samus is slow and heavy but survives hits others can't. Simon Belmont moves with the rigid, deliberate cadence of the original Castlevania. Mega Man can shoot in multiple directions and navigates platforms differently. The familiar Mario stages become completely new challenges depending on who you bring to them — a World 1-1 you've played a hundred times feels genuinely different when you're managing Simon's stiff movement through it.
What the Second Installment Added
The sequel expanded the original in meaningful ways. Additional playable characters joined the roster. Skin packs allow you to change the visual style of every character and environment, mixing graphic eras in any combination you want. Difficulty settings were tuned to open the game to newcomers without removing the challenge for players who want it.
Replayability by Design
The game effectively multiplies its own content by the size of its roster. Completing World 1-1 with Mega Man is a different game than completing it with Link. Each character requires a different approach to the same obstacles — and that variety keeps the game interesting across many sessions. If you enjoy classic platformers and retro gaming crossovers, Sponge Bob Patty Panic, Level Devil, and Infinite Stairs Online are worth exploring next.
